Goal
This project was part of the 10 weeks course Capita Selecta Medisign. The goal of this project was about making a contribution by (re)designing (part of) the “Stop de bloeding–red een leven campaign and/or training”. This project is initiated by Amsterdam AMC, Stop The Bleed and more healthcare partners. This project is done by Yang Zhang and me.
By comparing how the current training course engage bystanders with what the bystanders will experience in real life accident, a desired state and design vision is created.
Scenario-based exercise are proposed to fulfill the design vision and help to increase the surviving chance of the victims.
Problem framing
Three states were analyzed considering the training both in general and the goal specific: training state, realistic state and desired state. With the training state, people are sitting in a safe, quiet, peaceful room with a relatively relaxed mind.Trauma kit is close-by. Experts are present to coach you to stop the bleeding step by step. Although there are opportunities for self-practice in the course, the practice is without context and time limit. People only need to apply simple steps without making urgent decisions. Also, the participants can make mistakes in their practice. An overview of each state is presented below.
Vision
“Empower the participants of the course to save a life confidently by owning sufficient knowledge and offering them the chance to experience engaging simulated real-time situations.”
Scenario
As a method to come up with additional ideas for the training a scenario has been created to dive into the perspective of a bystander and how an emergency situation can happen and how to act at that moment.
This scenario gives more insights on how many factors there are that influences the ability to save a life. The huge difference between realistic situations and the training is that you need to act when this sudden emergency event occur.During this situation, the bystanders need to be sharp, focused and effective. Getting startled, shocked and even distracted at that point doesn’t create the ideal situation like how a person participates in the training. The scenario is presented below.
Application
In order to retain the necessary knowledge of stopping the bleed for a longer time, and train on making choices when people are stressed and surrounded by a dynamic environment, scenario-based exercises are designed to help participants to revisit the knowledge in an engaging way. We adopt several strategies when we design the exercises, that are immersing visualization, realistic scenarios, spaced repetition, and activation. Below are descriptions of our strategies to enhance the training.
Result
Our solution for the stop the bleed course is called scenario-based exercise. The exercise is set in various scenarios, simulating different contexts but based on real emergency situations. All the questions are designed to help people apply the stop the bleed knowledge in context. In the exercises, we use sound effects, immersing visuals and a time limit to simulate the psychological atmosphere of the real incident. If these series of questions will be answered properly within the time limit, the bleeding will be stopped and life is saved.
For now we have developed one emergency case with questions and an additional possible emergency situation. The developed case starts off with a visual combined with a small animation to create a sense of reality. The video below is showing the scenario-based exercise.
Project
The apps we used were Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator, In-design and Google Forms. I was in charge of the idea of the experience design considering simulation of context. Lastly I have created the scenario.
